The Travel and Leisure Law People

Farina Azam

"Working solely for the travel and leisure industry means that I have an understanding of the issues affecting our clients and can provide tailored and commercial advice as a result.”

Farina is the head of Travlaw’s Commercial Department focusing on regulatory advice, intellectual property and all aspects of commercial law. Farina is experienced in drafting consumer terms and conditions, commercial contracts, software and IT contracts as well as giving regulatory advice on the likes of the Package Travel Regulations, the ATOL Regulations, the Data Protection Act and OFT guidance. Farina has represented a number of clients before the Civil Aviation Authority, both in disputes and to obtain advice and has built up strong links with various trade bodies within the industry.

Farina is well known in the travel industry for her sensible and pragmatic advice to new start up companies, and for advising existing travel companies on their business model and the regulatory implications of this, including online travel agents, where she’s able to provide clients with a rounded service covering travel law (such as the effect of the Med Hotels case) and website and online trading requirements. Farina is also experienced in advising leisure and hospitality businesses including hotels, festival organisers and ticketing companies.

Also the main point of contact for Intellectual Property matters, Farina frequently advises clients on issues such as brand protection, trademarks, e-commerce, copyright and defamation. She is experienced in registering trademarks both in the UK and overseas, handling IP disputes for travel companies and drafting IP licences.

Farina regularly contributes to the travel trade media with articles in various publications on the issues affecting the travel industry, speaks at various travel events both in the UK and overseas, and is also a member of the British Hospitality Association’s Northern Committee.

Farina was chosen as one of the TTG’s “30under30: Tomorrow’s Travel Leaders”, for the year 2015/16. The TTG’s 30under30 scheme recognises young talent within the travel industry and Farina was recognised as “building up a reputation as one of the sector’s leading commercial lawyers”.

Key piece of legal advice?

“Register your brand name as a trademark! Infringement is rife within the travel industry, and prevention is cheaper than the cure!”
